CORAL TOOTH MUSHROOM
This delicately beautiful Hericium fruits from dead hardwood logs and stumps, sometimes in huge patches that can be seen from quite some distance. It is recognized by its short (mostly about 1 cm long) spines, and the fact that the spines hang in rows along delicate irregular mass with multiple branches. Sides and undersurfaces of branches covered with tufts of hanging, toothlike spines, white to creamy, becoming yellowish; texture coarsely toothed yet soft. Stalk short, thick, stublike, dividing into spine-covered branches; white to creamy, becoming yellowish; texture hairy. Spore print white. Spores magnified are almost round, smooth to roughened, colorless. When young, the fungus is soft and edible, but as it ages the branches and hanging spines become brittle and turn a light shade of yellowish brown.
